Rampart walk

He walls, built of masonry and blocks of sandstone, which is plentiful in the area, are of a Gothic style, with military characteristics, typical of the 13th and 14th centuries. A circular path on large corbels (supports) enables us to go around the whole site on the inside and to reach the upper line of arrow-slot windows – there is also a lower level of these for low level shots. These walls are crowned with rather unattractive battlements that were built at the end of the 19th century. In order to build them, a hard, local limestone was used. This material was so hard to work with that they had to lay the stones as they came, without shaping them. Between each stone they applied mortar. However, the supports and corners are made of sandstone. The height of the walls is considerable due to the fact that in those days fortresses were taken by storm.
